Quiz Features

  • Questions can be taken from different categories. If you are compiling a comprehensive quiz, questions from category Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 can be combined.
  • Not all questions within a category need to be used. Questions from multiple categories can be combined to create a new quiz.
  • Quizzes can be a combination of question types.
  • Quizzes can have random questions added.
  • Quizzes can be organized into Sections.  There is an option to have a specific section 'shuffle' questions.

Creating The Quiz

  • From the main content page, select "add an activity or resource" and choose quiz
  • Make all selections as to the management of the quiz and then choose "save and display".



  • Click on "Edit quiz"
  • To add the first question:  Click on the "Add" button to select either a new question, question bank or random question.



  • +a new question, as previously discussed....create the new question.
  • +from question bank (this would be for an existing question):



  • Select a category from the Question Bank
  • Put a check mark in front of one or more questions
  • Click "Add selected questions to the quiz"

Questions can be:

  • Sorted by ascending or descending question type order - click the triangle next to the letter "T"
  • Previewed using the 'magnifying glass' icon

Other Important Elements on this screen:

    • Maximum grade default - Change this to match the value on the exam
    • Save - if you change the maximum grade, you must save
    • Move or reposition question - move questions within a page or to another page
    • Delete
    • Repaginate - recommend no more than 5 questions per page and for essay questions, 1 per page.


Organization Questions

  • Once questions have been added to the quiz headings can be added to it.
  • Using the screen shot below....
  • Click the Add a page break icon after question 2 (icon is to the left of the question)
  • Click the "Add" button - from the drop down menu choose New Section.
  • Name the section
  • To shuffle questions within the section, place a check mark in the "Shuffle" box.


Adding Random Questions

  • Random Questions are questions that are automatically selected by Moodle for entry into a quiz.  
  • Each time the quiz is accessed, a different question(s) is (are) added. 
  • Each student could get a different quiz because of the random question(s).
  1. Random question from an existing category:
    • Select the category that you want the random question drawn from.
    • Add:  How many questions should be selected there must me enough questions in the category to meet your 'Number of random questions'.
    • Add random question



  2. Random question using a new category:
    • Here you can create a new category and add questions to it.
    • Be deliberate about the Parent category you select.
